On the Military Road From Tbilisi North Through the Caucasus

Not the One the Russians Came to Gori on.

This road is beautiful and there are multiple and ample Hydro Dams and power plants on the way up. Much of the work we are told, however, is now deemed dubious because of questionable maintenance.

And 765 KV transmission lines! -- what engineering!-- cutting up and across the Caucasus to Russia. Through areas where one doesn't even see much of a foothold.
Rostavi, south of Tblisi, was made the steel capital of the Soviet Union, but is now bereft of steel and other industry. The demand for power for all of Georgia now is about what it is for Cincinnati! 3200 MW or so.

We travelled up this 3-hour trip to the Russian border which is open only to Russians but not Georgians during the "freeze."

Snow can be seen at the higher elevations. And new tourist chalets being built for a ski area.

Georgia has 15 different climate zones, but with the Caucasus in the background for much of the country everything is framed as an idyllic setting, even in the cities. With the Gregorian singing and the boisterous partying and toasting, it is unforgettable. My image of Heaven. Dancing? At the restaurants -- amazing, with quick movements and then stop. Russian Cossack movements as well.
