Get ready for spring!

For What it's Worth We're Exactly One Month Past the Normal "Dead of Winter"

Look up and chin up. We are secretly moving toward March, April, etc.

And away from the Dead of Winter and our Siberian husking. ("A shell or outer covering, especially when considered worthless," like the 12 inches of snow we have burying the path from one of our cars.)

Can our sole, morose robin survive? Can those of us who do not limp to Florida do so?

In theory the worst is behind us. For Cincinnati, what is the "normal" dead of winter? (We are entering our third week of totally below freezing temps, at least where the sun is not shining, I believe, with no weather encouragement to melt our record snowfalls.)

I use "heating degree days" a lot -- or used to. That will get you to "dead of winter also."

This heating degree chart, by the way, is "valuable" in an odd way. Back in 2005 when I permanently downloaded it from the Weather Bureau it was free. Now they charge -- if you can find it.

We're Feeling Like the Dead of Winter

It's 13 degrees F. now, 6:00 am, Cincinnati, and probably got down to 9 or so earlier.

It feels like we're in the Dead of Winter all right!


A year ago we were in hot and humid Manila with dear Genny. But today...


Wonderful sports stories in today's Sunday New York Times, on this frigid Sunday.

Among them, stories elicited by Willie Mays;

The life of a basketball journeyman named Moom now playing for the Cavaliers;

Baron, the coach of Rhode Island, and formerly St. Bonaventure.


And I'm going to re-read "I.O.U." a wonderfully posited book on our financial troubles.

Even the Cincinnati Enquirer outdid itself today with a tear-out section on Duke Energy's Smart Grid doings. I hope to be the first to try it (I'm the first to apply, they told me).

Taking Off to Zero HDD Climate

The "dead of winter" is over Monday night. That's when 36 HDD (Cincinnati) notches down (to 35) for the first time, heading to zero this spring. We're going to accelerate this Tuesday afternoon for three weeks by visiting Genny in Manila, where it is now 79 degrees. And humid.

By the time we return on February 16, I expect the Obama administration to have done a lot, and I mean it.
