"Ride Him Like You Own Him"

“It feels terrific,” Pletcher said, giving Borel credit for the ride out of the No. 4 position. “We didn’t want to handcuff him with too many instructions. ‘Ride him like you own him.’ He’s an instinctive rider.”


After watching my granddaughter play tentatively in 5th grade AAU basketball tournament yesterday, and after reading Vecsey's article today, maybe Emma would have been benefitted by instructions given to the winning jockey in the Kentucky Derby yesterday:

Give no specific (and possibly confusing) instructions: Just "ride him like you own him."
